IGAD Boosts Global Voice: UN Mission Opens in New York

Sep 30, 2025

In a strategic move designed to amplify the Horn of Africa’s voice on the world stage, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) officially opened its Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The inauguration signifies a notable escalation in the regional bloc's commitment to global engagement.

The office, intended to deepen the collaboration between IGAD and the UN, hopes to advance advocacy and cooperation on issues that affect the Horn of Africa.

These concerns include peace and security, climate resilience, humanitarian response, health, and sustainable development.

IGAD’s Executive Secretary, Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), presided over the ceremony and emphasised the critical role the Mission will play.

He stated that the permanent mission would not only serve as a diplomatic bridge between IGAD and the UN system but also as a platform for mobilising global support to address the pressing challenges facing the Horn of Africa.

“This is a pivotal moment for IGAD. The Permanent Mission represents our commitment to a stronger, more visible presence within the international community. It will allow us to more effectively advocate for the needs of our member states and contribute meaningfully to global solutions,” Dr Gebeyehu said, according to a transcript of his remarks.

Cherinet Hariffo, IGAD’s Permanent Observer to the UN, will continue to lead the organisation's efforts in New York.

He has served in this role for the past year. He will be responsible for ensuring the region's priorities are effectively communicated and addressed within global policy discussions.

“My focus is to facilitate stronger partnerships with UN member states, agencies, and development partners. The establishment of this Mission provides us with a dedicated platform to foster understanding and collaboration, ultimately advancing the interests of the IGAD region,” Mr Cherinet reportedly said.

The new mission aims to function as a central hub for advancing IGAD's interests within the UN framework. It represents a dedicated space for diplomacy, negotiation, and coalition-building with various international stakeholders. The goal is to proactively engage with the UN system. The Mission seeks to secure support for regional development initiatives and contribute to policy discussions relevant to the Horn of Africa.

According to sources at IGAD headquarters in Djibouti, the decision to establish a permanent presence in New York underscores IGAD's determination to position itself as a constructive contributor to international peace, security, and prosperity. By having representation in New York, IGAD strengthens its capacity to advocate for regional interests, align with global development agendas, and contribute meaningfully to collective solutions for global challenges.
