The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held a meeting with Evgeny Terekhin, the Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia and Representative to the AU, to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two partners. Their conversation centered on AU–Russia cooperation and the ongoing preparations for the 2nd Ministerial Conference of the Russia–Africa Partnership Forum.
They also reviewed recent security and political developments, including the situation in the Sahel, the AU-led peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, and various capacity-building initiatives. Crucially, the officials agreed to intensify their coordination to effectively advocate for Africa’s common position at the upcoming Climate Summit in Brazil.
The Chairperson acknowledged and expressed appreciation for Russia’s consistent and principled support, particularly within the UN Security Council. In return, Ambassador Terekhin commended the Chairperson for his vigorous engagement at the recent UN General Assembly (UNGA80), where he effectively championed Africa’s priorities and worked to strengthen the continent’s influence on the global stage.
