The 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit officially commenced today at the Conference Hall of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa. The high-profile event brings together global leaders to address critical issues surrounding food security and sustainable food systems.
The summit sees the participation of heads of state and government from various nations, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed warmly welcomed all delegates to Ethiopia. "Welcome to Ethiopia, the historic home of coffee," he stated, emphasizing the country's rich heritage. He further reiterated his welcome to those who traveled to the nation for the summit, highlighting Ethiopia's significance as both the origin of coffee and a land steeped in history.
During her address, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni advocated for a shift in the relationship between European and African nations. "This is not the time for us European countries to exploit Africans through indirect colonialism and then benefit by receiving refugees," Meloni asserted. She emphasized the potential for mutual prosperity, stating, "We can mutually benefit by supporting African countries to develop their own nations and by fostering trade ties."
