In a significant gathering aimed at reshaping global food systems, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) opened the 2nd United Nations Food System Conference this morning, emphasising the urgent need for resilience, inclusivity, and equity in food production and distribution.
The conference, co-hosted by Italy, brings together leaders, experts, and stakeholders from around the world to address pressing challenges in the agricultural sector.
“Welcome to Ethiopia, the birthplace of human history and coffee,” Prime Minister Abiy stated in his opening remarks.
He expressed pride in Ethiopia's role as a host nation, highlighting the country's rich cultural heritage and its potential to lead discussions on sustainable food practices. The Prime Minister reiterated that the conference serves as a platform to renew commitments made two years ago, when countries collectively agreed on a vision for a more resilient and sustainable food system.
The backdrop of this year’s conference is marked by escalating global issues such as climate change, food insecurity, and economic disparities. As the world grapples with these challenges, the conference aims to foster collaboration among nations to create equitable food systems that cater to all populations. Prime Minister Abiy underscored the importance of inclusivity, stating that “no one should be left behind” in the quest for a sustainable future.
In addition to plenary sessions, the conference features workshops and panel discussions addressing various aspects of food systems, including innovation in agriculture, sustainable practices, and equitable distribution networks.
Experts are expected to share best practices and successful case studies from different countries, aiming to inspire actionable solutions that can be implemented globally.
The conference also provides a unique opportunity for participants to engage with local Ethiopian farmers and agricultural leaders, showcasing the nation’s diverse agricultural landscape and traditional practices.
This interaction is designed to enrich discussions with grassroots perspectives on food security and sustainability.
It was learned that as the conference progresses over the next few days, attendees will focus on developing actionable strategies to combat food insecurity and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
With global leaders united in their mission, the hope is that this conference will catalyse significant changes in the world’s food systems for generations to come.
