Ethiopia, World Bank Bolster Partnership for Human Capital

Oct 03, 2025

Ethiopia's Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, met today with World Bank Vice President Mamta Murthi to solidify their partnership on advancing the nation’s human capital agenda. Murthi, the Vice President for the People Vice Presidency, is currently in Addis Ababa for the Human Capital Forum.

During the discussion, Minister Ahmed underscored the Ethiopian government's key priorities, which include focusing on quality education, making strides in healthcare—specifically in reducing infant and maternal mortality—and scaling up its national safety net programs.

The Minister extended his gratitude to the World Bank for its sustained support of projects crucial for improving Human Capital Outcomes, particularly in areas like safety nets, education, skills development, and health.

Vice President Murthi, whose visit included a stop in Hawassa and participation in the Human Capital Forum, reaffirmed the Bank's commitment to supporting Ethiopia. This renewed support specifically includes the Health Compact and the health sector's ongoing efforts to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage.

The meeting's outcome signals a continued strong collaboration between Ethiopia and the World Bank to invest in the country's most vital resource: its people.
