New Natural Gas Production in Calub to Significantly Cut Ethiopia's Imported Fuel Reliance

Oct 04, 2025

The commencement of natural gas production in Calub is expected to yield substantial benefits by reducing Ethiopia’s high dependency on imported fuel, according to a recent report.

Adonay Abreha, an energy expert and consultant, emphasized that utilizing the newly found gas reserves for industrial, transportation, and household energy supply will play a critical role in decreasing domestic fuel consumption.

The expert expressed great satisfaction, noting that the confirmation of the long-anticipated natural gas reserves is a momentous development. He highlighted that the gas's high utility will be vital in preserving foreign currency currently spent on fuel imports.

In terms of practicality and cost, Adonay stated that one kilogram of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) can power a vehicle for 34 kilometers. Crucially, he added that the market price for the gas will be less than that of a single liter of petrol.

The natural gas, which is known for its high pressure and combustion capacity, will be delivered in cylinders. The expert touted its high value, asserting that it offers superior advantages compared to liquid fuel.

Adonay also pointed out the environmental benefits, noting that the gas will significantly reduce the level of polluting emissions in Ethiopia. He cited that major developing nations, including China, Brazil, and India, already utilize natural gas.

As an example, he mentioned that over six million vehicles in India are currently using natural gas as part of a concentrated effort to mitigate air pollution.

The report concluded by stating that the construction of the Ogaden Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) Project, with an annual production capacity of 111 million liters of natural gas, is set to make a massive contribution to supporting Ethiopia’s green economy development strategy.
