Ethiopia Prioritizes Education Reform, Tourism Development, Says President Taye

Oct 06, 2025

President Taye Atske-Selassie detailed the government's comprehensive strategy, focusing primarily on two critical areas: elevating education quality and aggressively developing the tourism sector as a core economic pillar.

The President stated that a special focus is being placed on education quality, identifying its current state as the primary cause of the "breakdown"observed in the younger generation. To address this, the administration is actively expanding the construction of standard-compliant pre-primary and formal schools and is committed to strengthening this expansion going forward.

Furthermore, the government gives vast attention to the future generation by working intensely on children's development and education. Key initiatives include improving women's participation in education with special emphasis, reviewing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to ensure it produces skilled, productive professionals that the economy needs, and safeguarding the academic freedom of higher education institutions while concurrently enhancing their administration and human resource development.

The government is also working specially to expand educational access in pastoralist areas and aims to increase overall enrollment in both pre-primary and secondary education. An important measure already taken is the implementation of the school feeding program, which prevents low-income students from dropping out—a program that has earned recognition from international organizations. This push for quality is being supported by mobilizing the community under the motto "Education for the Generation" to ensure broad access, which is expected to contribute significantly to the overall improvement of quality.

Simultaneously, under the government's multi-sectoral economic policy, President Taye affirmed that significant attention will be given to tourism. He pledged that existing tourist attractions will be developed to meet standards and made more convenient for visitors. The government strongly believes that by developing these destinations, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of tourism services, it is possible to create vast national wealth and ensure national benefit.

Future plans to bolster the sector involve designing and implementing eco-tourism projects that specifically safeguard community benefits, alongside building cultural centers that showcase the history and traditions of local residents.

The President noted that recent work in the sector has already helped tangibly realize the country's potential for shared prosperity, and he indicated that the work of increasing tourism destinations that support the vision of building a "Beautiful Ethiopia"will be strengthened in the current budget year.

Finally, he stated that these vital tourism destinations will be linked with air transport, making them more accessible and convenient for both international visitors and local residents.
