Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has paid tribute to the late First Mufti Haji Omar Idris, specifically commending the former President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council for his "monumental" success in securing the Council's legal recognition and uniting diverse Muslim factions. 

The Mufti's death has prompted an outpouring of grief from high-ranking officials and major religious institutions across Ethiopia. President of Ethiopia, Taye Astke Selassie, prosperity party Deputy chairman, Adem Fareh, Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebe, and leaders of the Ethiopian Islamic affairs and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church were among those mourning the loss of a figure celebrated for his enduring dedication to Ethiopian unity.
