Addis Ababa on Track to Host World Internet Conference Following High-Level Talks

Nov 01, 2025

Ethiopia is advancing plans to host a major global technology event after high-level discussions took place regarding bringing The World Internet Conference (WIC) to the capital.

Dr. Belete Molla, Ethiopia’s Minister of Innovation and Technology, met with Sun Mingxi, Minister and Chargé d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, to coordinate preliminary arrangements for the prestigious international forum.

The two officials focused on joint preparatory work for the WIC, which is currently scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa in September of next year.

Minister Dr. Belete Molla confirmed that, given Ethiopia's successful track record of hosting global events, the necessary resources and preparations will be marshaled to ensure the conference's success. He stressed that a collaborative approach, involving all stakeholders, will be essential.

Sun Mingxi stated that the preparatory work for the conference is progressing, and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected soon to facilitate the technical arrangements.

Officials highlighted that hosting the WIC—which draws top global industry leaders, academics, high-ranking government officials, and investors—will offer immense benefits. Beyond sectoral advantages, the conference is expected to significantly boost Ethiopia's profile as a preferred destination for conference tourism.
