Fitsum Arega, Director General of the Ethiopian Diaspora Service, highlighted a significant innovation on his Facebook page by Professor Tsegaye Nega, an Ethiopian diaspora member residing in Minnesota, USA, aimed at solving cooking-related issues in Ethiopia.
Fistum recalled a previous conversation with Professor Tsegaye in Washington, D.C., where the professor shared his vision for manufacturing energy-efficient and cost-effective electric, charcoal, and pellet stoves.
According to Fistum's post, Professor Tsegaye has now successfully realized his plan. Following considerable effort, he has produced and is supplying affordable stoves that offer remarkable fuel savings:
- 75% saving on electric power.
- 50% saving on charcoal.
- 65% saving on pellets (made from processed coffee waste).
The Director General emphasized that the project's importance extends far beyond cooking efficiency, highlighting its role in environmental protection and public health. "While planting seedlings is a vital necessity, preventing the cutting down of forests is another major priority," Fistum stated.
Professor Tsegaye’s initiative is generating multiple benefits:
- Creating job opportunities.
- Preventing smoke-related illnesses.
- Saving foreign currency.
- Encouraging innovation.
Fistum concluded his post by commending the professor's dedication. "I thanked the professor, encouraged him to rapidly expand his work, and we concluded our conversation. That's the way to do it, Professor!"
