China Launches World’s First Underwater AI Data Center

Aug 04, 2025

China has launched the world’s first commercial underwater data center, using the ocean's natural cooling to dramatically reduce energy use and set a new standard for sustainable AI.

The data center, submerged off the coast of Hainan Province uses the natural cooling properties of the ocean to dramatically cut down on the energy typically used by massive air conditioning systems.

Equipped with more than 400 high-performance servers, the center can handle over 7,000 AI queries per second—from training complex models to running industrial simulations. This single facility has the computing power of roughly 30,000 high-end gaming PCs, setting a new standard for sustainable computing.

The project offers a promising blueprint for the future as global demand for computational power continues to soar. Instead of consuming valuable land and massive amounts of fresh water for cooling, this subsea approach could be a key to developing AI in an environmentally responsible way.
