Dec 03, 2025 5

A leading journalist from the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) has received a prestigious award for excellence in science reporting at the 13th World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) held in Pretoria, South Africa.

Demis Mekuria, a Chief Editor in EBC's Foreign Languages News and Current Affairs Department, was presented with an Honour Award in the Best Science Reporting category at the continental summit—the first time the WCSJ has been hosted on African soil.

Demis was recognized for his in-depth report detailing the scientific and biological solutions being implemented in Ethiopia to combat the invasive water hyacinth (Enboch) threatening Lake Tana.

His work earned him both a trophy and a financial prize.

The accolade adds to Demis's previous successes; he was named the African Climate Change Reporter of the Year at a competition held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2018.

The World Conference of Science Journalists gathers global media professionals to celebrate and promote high-quality science reporting. The awards segment specifically recognizes journalists across Africa who have produced the most impactful reports on scientific developments relevant to the continent.
