Ethiopia Exceeds Export Target, Generating $3.37bn in Four Months

Ethiopia's export trade generated $3.37 billion in revenue during the first four months of the current fiscal year, the Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, Dr. Kassahun Gofe, announced. The figure surpasses the government's planned target of $2.84 billion for the period.

The minister made the statement during a quarterly performance review of the ministry and its affiliate institutions. Dr. Kassahun highlighted that tangible results had been recorded across all economic sectors under review.

Key Performance Highlights:

  • Trade Streamlining: To improve service delivery, over 1.34 million online registration and licensing activities were processed.
  • Market Regulation: Inspections were carried out on 603 business establishments, leading to action being taken against 59 firms.
  • Price Gouging Crackdown: Significant measures were taken against over 106,000 traders found to have implemented unnecessary price increases following the recent salary adjustment for civil servants.
  • Quality Control: Efforts to ensure product quality included controlling 1.28 million metric tonnes of imported goods and 134,000 units of export commodities.
  • Sector Focus: Dr. Kassahun added that focused work is being done to maximize the country's benefit from exports, particularly within the livestock resource sector.
