The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is "committed" to supporting Ethiopia in its efforts to establish a peaceful nuclear energy program, according to its Director-General, Rafael Mariano Grossi.

In a message welcoming Ethiopia's move to launch a nuclear program, Grossi specifically congratulated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Ethiopian government on the establishment of the new Ethiopian Nuclear Commission.

Grossi affirmed the IAEA's readiness to assist the country in achieving the objectives of its nuclear energy program, which is designated strictly for peaceful purposes.

He praised Ethiopia for setting up the Nuclear Energy Commission, which he said provides a legal framework for the sector and facilitates the "practical application of nuclear energy for peaceful uses."

The Director-General noted that the creation of the commission will enable Ethiopia to enact laws in line with international conventions, thereby leading to the realisation of a "safe and secure nuclear power generation."

Grossi highlighted the broader significance of nuclear power, describing it as a "reliable source of energy with low greenhouse gas emissions." He concluded that the technology is therefore "crucial for accelerating social and economic development" in the country.
