Ethiopia Firmly Rejects Egypt’s False Narrative Regarding GERD—Dr. Fethi Mahdi

Dec 10, 2025 228

Ethiopia will emphatically not accept the false narrative being propagated by Egypt, according to Dr. Fethi Mahdi, Deputy Chairperson of the Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs Standing Committee at the House of Peoples' Representatives.

Dr. Fethi stated that Egypt has persistently attempted to create diplomatic pressure against Ethiopia by spreading misleading accounts concerning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) to Arab League states and the international community.

Speaking with EBC FM Addis 97.1, the Deputy Chairperson affirmed that despite Egypt's attempts to obstruct the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the Ethiopian people succeeded in completing it through unified effort.

He explained that although it is a scientifically established fact that the dam construction offers benefits, such as mitigating naturally occurring droughts and floods, the narrative being disseminated by Egypt contradicts this reality.

He further argued that the volume of the Nile water will not decrease simply because Ethiopia has dammed it; instead, the water can be distributed equitably to all riparian countries, including Egypt, after passing through Ethiopia.

Dr. Fethi also highlighted that the unilateral agreements Egypt concluded with various countries are deemed invalid and lack transparency under the principles of international water law.

He stressed that because these agreements exclude the Nile Basin countries and prejudice Ethiopia’s national interests, our country will absolutely reject them. He concluded by reiterating that Ethiopia constructed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in full compliance with international law.
