Jan 20, 2026 104

Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines Group officially confirmed a firm order today for nine 787-9 Dreamliners. The agreement, which was initially reached in late 2025, also includes a finalized order for 11 additional 737-8 aircraft. This total commitment of 20 jets marks a pivotal moment in the carrier’s "Vision 2035" strategy to modernize its fleet and maintain its status as Africa’s leading airline.

The 787-9 Dreamliner is the focal point of this expansion, offering the airline the range and efficiency needed to reach new global markets. These aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2031 and 2033 and are expected to facilitate new long-haul routes, potentially including the airline's first-ever direct services to Australia. By utilizing the 787-9's advanced technology, Ethiopian Airlines will see a 25% reduction in fuel use and emissions, directly supporting its goals for sustainable aviation growth.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, noted that the acquisition of these modern aircraft is essential for enhancing customer service and expanding the airline's international footprint. He emphasized that the integration of the 787-9 and the 737-8 variants allows the airline to optimize its operations from its primary hub in Addis Ababa, which is currently being expanded through the Bishoftu International Mega Airport City project.

Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, praised the airline's leadership, stating that the Dreamliner family continues to be a game-changer for Ethiopian’s intercontinental reach. With this latest order, Ethiopian Airlines reinforces its position as the largest operator of the 787 family in Africa, bringing its total backlog for the 787-9 variant to 20 aircraft.

The 11 additional 737-8 jets will bolster the airline’s short-to-medium-haul network, providing the flexibility needed to connect passengers across the African continent and beyond. This comprehensive fleet renewal ensures that Ethiopian Airlines remains at the forefront of the industry, operating one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the world.
