1.5 Million Homes in Five Years

Feb 04, 2026 108

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has announced a major initiative aimed at providing a sustainable solution to the country’s housing shortage.

Five-Year Target: 1.5 million new homes are slated for construction over the next five years.

Collaborative Investment: The project will not rely solely on the government; it will be executed through private developers and Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

Systemic Support: To ensure success, work has already begun on streamlining bank loans, architectural designs, land supply, and policy reforms.

Local Production: Efforts are being intensified to boost the domestic production of steel, cement, and other essential construction materials to prevent supply shortages.

"While the plan may seem massive, it is still modest compared to the actual demand for housing," the Prime Minister stated. He emphasized that meeting the public's demand for homeownership will require a collective effort from all stakeholders.
