As Ethiopia and Iran mark a milestone 75 years of formal diplomacy, the two nations have signaled a fresh era of cooperation within the expanding BRICS framework during high-level talks in New Delhi.

State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hadera Abera, met with an Iranian delegation headed by Sous-Sherpa Mehrdad Kiaei on the sidelines of the first BRICS Sherpas’ meeting of the year. The timing of the encounter is particularly symbolic, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Addis Ababa and Tehran.

Officials described the exchange as productive, focusing on how the longstanding relationship can be leveraged to meet the modern demands of the BRICS bloc. Both representatives emphasized a shared commitment to deepening bilateral ties, moving beyond historical recognition toward more robust economic and political integration.

The meeting underscores Ethiopia's proactive stance in its first full year as a BRICS member, seeking to solidify strategic partnerships with veteran and newly admitted members alike. By framing their future cooperation through the lens of a seven-decade-long friendship, both countries are aiming to turn historical proximity into a functional advantage on the global stage.
