World Athletics Director of Competitions Pierce O'Callaghan has revealed that Ethiopia is rapidly developing the advanced infrastructure required to host the World Athletics Championships.
He highlighted that the Adey Abeba Stadium is currently on track to secure the highest level of World Athletics certification, a milestone that would officially qualify the nation to host elite global events like the Diamond League and the World Athletics U20 Championships.
The Director’s praise extended beyond the track, noting how the extensive corridor development, cycling paths, and pedestrian walkways currently transforming Addis Ababa are positioning the city as a premier destination for both sports tourism and international diplomacy. Much of this progress is credited to the direct focus and priority given to the sector by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
With these developments in motion, O'Callaghan expressed his firm belief that Ethiopia is not only the capital of Africa but is also set to fulfill its vision of becoming the world’s central athletics hub over the next fifteen years.
