Feb 20, 2026 224

Ethio Telecom has officially launched a new digital entertainment service called teleStream. Since 2018, the company has been building infrastructure to realize a "Digital Ethiopia" and simplify the lives of citizens, and CEO Frehiwot Tamru noted that teleStream is a key part of their current three-year strategic plan.

The CEO explained that this digital platform goes beyond entertainment, allowing any citizen to create and share content regarding education, health, and the activities of both government and non-governmental organizations. This service is designed to operate 24/7 across the entire country.

To support these digital services, Ethio Telecom has expanded its reach to provide 4G coverage in 1,069 cities and 5G in 28 cities. With today’s launch, the company’s 87.5 million customers can access teleStream on their televisions or mobile phones by paying through telebirr. The platform features a variety of local content, including movies, children’s programming, religious broadcasts, and educational channels.

Frehiwot Tamru also emphasized the economic impact of the service, noting that because 98% of current broadcasting is satellite-based, it costs the country significant foreign currency. teleStream is expected to reduce this expenditure while simultaneously creating new job opportunities and providing a simple way for people to showcase their talents.
