Ethiopia Declares New ‘Era of Victories’ Through Economic Sovereignty

Mar 02, 2026 286

Ethiopia’s top officials have marked the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa by declaring that the nation’s historic defeat of colonial invaders must now be channeled into a modern crusade for economic independence and maritime access. Under the banner "From a Proud History to a Bright Horizon," Defense Minister Engineer Aisha Mohammed and Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie told crowds that the spirit of 1896 is the literal "sustenance" for Ethiopia’s current trajectory, framing massive infrastructure projects like the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the "Wheat Revolution" as the contemporary equivalent of the battlefield triumphs of the past.

Minister Aisha characterized the original victory not merely as a local military success but as a global demonstration of "moral superiority" that proved no imperial power is invincible when faced with a unified people. Echoing this sentiment, Mayor Adanech emphasized that just as the heroes of Adwa set aside internal differences to secure a sovereign state, the current generation must resolve conflicts through dialogue to protect national interests. She issued a pointed call to action, urging the nation to pursue the "inevitable prosperity" of Ethiopia by finalizing urban transformations and reclaiming the "unfairly closed" access to the sea, describing the legacy of Adwa as a "living school of patriotism" for the challenges of 2026.
