Ethiopia, France Strengthen Economic Partnership, Debt Cooperation During Spring Meetings

Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, met with senior French Treasury officials on the margins of the Spring Meetings to reaffirm the strategic economic partnership between the two nations. The high-level discussions focused on deepening bilateral development cooperation, enhancing macroeconomic coordination, and maintaining strong momentum regarding Ethiopia’s comprehensive debt restructuring agenda. 

Both parties exchanged views on closer collaboration through the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to support Ethiopia’s reform program and long-term economic stability. Minister Ahmed expressed appreciation for France’s consistent engagement and its pivotal leadership as Co-Chair of the Official Creditor Committee (OCC). He specifically underscored France’s key role in advancing debt treatment, highlighting the successful bilateral agreement reached under the G20 Common Framework.

The talks also addressed France’s continued support in ongoing negotiations with private creditors, which remains critical to restoring debt sustainability and unlocking new financing flows. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening cooperation, attracting investment, and advancing sustainable and inclusive growth within Ethiopia’s reform agenda.
