Ethiopia’s Path to Climate-Compatible Development

Apr 22, 2026 192

Ethiopia continues to advance its climate-resilient development journey with confidence, backed by tangible results. This journey is built on an integrated approach that harmonizes development actions across the spectrum from mitigation to adaptation.

To mitigate climate impact, the nation has significantly increased its green cover by controlling carbon emissions, preventing deforestation, and planting 48 billion seedlings through the Green Legacy Initiative. Simultaneously, modernizing water management and implementing climate-smart agriculture have brought about visible transformations in food security.

In the urban development sector, expanding riverfront projects, building green and modern infrastructure, and promoting non-motorized green transport have created a new direction for reconciling cities with their ecosystems. Nationally, utilizing surface and groundwater for irrigation, adopting resilient crop varieties, and strengthening livestock resources are reinforcing nutritional security.

In the energy sector, the expansion of green power sources has been established as a catalyst for development, providing a foundation for both industry and electric transport. As all these efforts are implemented through frameworks such as LT-LEDS, TYDP, NDC, and NAP in alignment with the SDGs, Ethiopia is laying the foundation for a sustainable and green future for generations to come.

This journey is not merely a response; it is the blueprint for Ethiopia’s future.
