Ethiopia to Produce Four Times the GERD’s Power in Solar Tech

Apr 25, 2026 136

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has announced that Ethiopia is on track to produce over 20.3 gigawatts of solar cell capacity by next year, a figure that is a staggering four times the total power output of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

This massive expansion, driven by six cutting-edge factories in Hawassa, Debre Berhan, and Addis Ababa, marks a complete transformation from just a year ago when the country produced zero solar cells. This leap into high-tech manufacturing is expected to bring in over $1 billion in foreign exchange revenue, far surpassing the earnings once generated by the textile sector.

To understand the sheer magnitude of 20.3 gigawatts, consider that this annual factory output could generate enough electricity to power approximately 15 million homes or keep over 2 billion LED lightbulbs lit simultaneously. By integrating domestic lithium for battery production, the nation is effectively building the equivalent of four major dams' worth of energy technology every single year, securing a future of 100% self-sufficiency and regional dominance.
