Ethiopia’s AI, Robotic Industrial Shift

Apr 26, 2026 179

Ethiopia has officially transitioned to an advanced industrial era where modern production is driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics, moving away from the traditional manufacturing models of the past. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), unveiled three massive new facilities—Toyo Solar Phase 2, Origin, and Lumintech—where state-of-the-art "N-type" solar cells are now beingmanufactured through fully automated systems.

This radical pivot comes as a direct response to the decline of the textile sector at Hawassa Industrial Park, which saw 90% of its capacity sit idle after the loss of duty-free trade access, proving that a single-market strategy was no longer viable for the nation's growth.

Currently, the park has been revitalized as a technological center where robotic precision is used for the first time in the country’s history to produce complex electronics alongside the new HZ Gas plant. This successful embrace of AI and automated robotics is intended to be the catalyst for Ethiopia’s next big step: transitioning this same high-tech manufacturing capability into the domestic production of computers and smartphones.
