"Sovereignty Cannot Be Imported": PM Abiy Demands Economic Independence

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has issued a powerful call for Ethiopia to end its "culture of begging," asserting that true national sovereignty is impossible as long as the country relies on foreign aid and imports for its basic needs.

Declaring that true independence and dignity are only achieved through self-sufficiency, the Prime Minister emphasized that meeting the nation's demands with its own capabilities is now a mandatory requirement for survival.

Addressing recent economic hurdles, he pointed out that Ethiopia’s untapped oil and gas reserves have left the industrial and transport sectors vulnerable to global shocks. He stressed that domestic production is a fundamental pillar of national security, noting that reliance on foreign aid compromises a nation’s ability to make independent decisions.

To realign the economy, the Prime Minister called on banks and policymakers to prioritize funding for strategic survival industries over luxury goods, ensuring a self-reliant foundation for future generations.
