Rooftop Farming in Addis Ababa

Aug 13, 2025

Getachew Eyob believes that plants are an essential part of life. Because of his great love for plants, he would grow a variety of them wherever he lived.

Twelve years ago, after building his own house, he found the yard to be too small, so he turned his building's rooftop into a farm.

Getachew is a medical microbiologist by profession. After work, he goes to the third floor of his building to care for his plants.

"My house is unique from all the others in the area," he says. "It's special not because of the building itself, but because of the greenery that covers it and the beautiful scent that comes from them."

The narrow space on top of his building is filled with coffee, avocado, Gish'ta also known as sugar apple or sweet-sop, peach, banana, mango, passion fruit, and many other fruit-bearing plants.

In his small yard, in addition to the plants, he also keeps bees and harvests honey.

"I don't know what depression is; the influence of my plants has kept me healthy," says Getachew, who dreams of continuing his journey of gardening without limits in a larger space someday.
