The African Union has formally recognized Ethiopia’s 7th general election as a landmark achievement in the nation's democratic evolution. During a high-level ceremony at Addis Ababa’s Skylight Hotel, the Union underscored its enduring commitment to fostering credible electoral processes and robust governance across the continent.

The formal announcement of the election results drew a distinguished audience, including President Taye Atske Selassie; African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye; international observers; and members of the diplomatic corps.

Speaking on behalf of African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Commissioner Adeoye hailed the event as a “milestone” for Ethiopia. He commended both the Ethiopian government and the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) for taking a meaningful step toward strengthening democratic governance. The commissioner highlighted the deployment of an AU election observation mission, led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, which utilized a diverse team of over 60 observers to ensure a thorough and impartial assessment of the electoral process.

The AU’s engagement, Adeoye noted, remains rooted in a firm commitment to democratic legitimacy and the support of member states as they build institutions that foster long-term peace and stability. “The African Union is committed to supporting peaceful democratic consolidation,” he stated, expressing his optimism regarding Ethiopia’s continued progress in both peacebuilding and democratic reform.
