Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has commended the successful conclusion of the 2018 Ethiopian Calendar (E.C.) General Election, labeling it a historic milestone that demonstrated the public's profound sense of responsibility and dedication to peace.
In his address to Parliament, the prime minister noted that this election cycle differed from previous ones, as the democratic process itself became the primary target of sustained attacks, rather than the typical political rivalry between opposing parties. Despite these challenges, Abiy stated that the Ethiopian electorate successfully cast their ballots, sending a unified, nationwide rejection of extremism and ethnic division.
Addressing the political landscape and seat distribution, the Prime Minister highlighted the ruling Prosperity Party's approach to the contest. By competing for 85% of the parliamentary seats and leaving the remaining portion open for opposition parties, Abiy asserted that the Prosperity Party demonstrated a significant commitment to fostering a pluralistic and democratic system in Ethiopia.
