Aug 15, 2025

The Ethiopian Electric Utility has successfully added more than 500,000 new customers in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017E.C. This expansion marks a significant milestone for the institution, which now serves over 5.2 million customers across the nation.

CEO Engineer Getu Geremew announced that the service has generated over 63 billion birr in revenue from power sales and various other sources, reflecting a robust growth trajectory.

The latest figures reveal that electricity access has reached 54 per cent nationwide, benefiting 8,350 cities and towns. Additionally, 155 kebeles, small administrative divisions, have gained access to electricity services this year alone. This progress underscores the government's commitment to improving energy accessibility in Ethiopia, particularly in underserved areas.

However, challenges remain. The service reported the seizure of approximately one thousand meters due to power theft, highlighting ongoing issues with illegal connections. To address these concerns, maintenance and expansion efforts are underway to mitigate power outages and improve reliability for customers.

In a notable shift towards modernisation, nearly 95 per cent of customers are now paying their service fees digitally, indicating a growing trend towards technological integration in service delivery. Looking ahead to the new fiscal year, the Ethiopian Electric Utility aims to introduce over 800,000 additional customers to its network while setting an ambitious revenue target of more than 74 billion birr from energy sales. The total revenue goal for the upcoming fiscal year is set at an impressive 101 billion birr.

As the Ethiopian Electricity Utility continues to evolve, its focus remains on enhancing customer experience and expanding access to electricity across the nation, paving the way for a brighter future for millions of Ethiopians.
