Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that the government is prepared to build at least 1.5 million new houses over the next five years to resolve citizens' housing supply challenges. The Prime Minister stated that while the country managed to build 1.2 million houses across Ethiopia over the past seven years, plans are now underway to further scale up this capacity to achieve the 1.5 million target in the coming five years.

PM Abiy explained that these houses will be built through the government, the private sector, and public-private partnership options, noting that a supportive policy has already been approved by the Council of Ministers. To realize this massive plan, modern systems are being implemented, and various construction technologies, including 3D technology, are being imported into the country.

Additionally, factories manufacturing construction inputs have commenced production, and extensive work is being done to prepare the required workforce through training. The Prime Minister added that the housing construction drive will not be limited to urban centers but will also be carried out in rural areas.

The government is also focused on facilitating financial access to enable low- and middle-income citizens to become homeowners. To support this, a modern system is being established where citizens can save from their income to achieve homeownership through long-term payments, while a rental alternative will be provided for those who cannot afford to buy.
