British Ambassador to Ethiopia urged all stakes to redouble efforts towards the humanitarian cause of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS).
Addressing a gathering of diplomats, society members and humanitarian donors' group here today, the Ambassador, Darren Welch, underlined that the humanitarian effort needs more support from ambassadors, humanitarian leaders, government officials and members of the civil society.
The remark came here when the Society marked the World Humanitarian Day here in Addis Ababa.
Themed “Strengthening Local Leadership & Honoring Humanitarian Workers," this year’s celebration of World Humanitarian Day underscored the enduring values of unity, compassion, and resilience in the face of humanitarian challenges.
Darren Welch made call at a time when challenges such as complex geo-politics, climate change and conflict are staring everyone in the eyes.
"This year we'll give perhaps 80 million pounds in support of humanitarian relief in Ethiopia as part of our desire to remain a steadfast and strong partner of the Ethiopian and the UN humanitarian system in the country," Welch pledged during an exclusive interview with EBC World.
For his part, US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, underscored that efforts should be redoubled to commit to the people, who are vulnerable around the world and here in Ethiopia.
For nearly a century, the ERCS has been a cornerstone of humanitarian assistance across Ethiopia—responding to natural disasters, public health crises, and conflict-induced emergencies.
“Our volunteers have been with communities in their most difficult times—offering help, hope, and healing,” Abera Tola, who sits at the top of the 90-year-old society of humanitarian workers, underscored.
Despite the recent crises across the country, the ERCS has maintained its resolve. “Their courage and compassion reflect the very essence of this year’s theme. Today’s celebration is not just ceremonial, it is a recognition of their daily sacrifices,” Tola added.
The President called on development partners, supporters, and the public to renew their commitment by backing the Society’s fundraising drives, ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers, and expanding outreach to vulnerable populations.
Participants of the event toured around the School of Humanity and training facility as well as warehouses of the Society located the Saris area, Nifas-Silk Lafto Sub-city.
