Ethiopia to Highlight Climate Successes at COP30 After BRICS Backing

Ethiopia is poised to showcase its extensive efforts and leadership in combating climate change at the upcoming COP30 Climate Summit in Brazil. This announcement from Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Ethiopia's Minister of Planning and Development, follows strong support for the nation's green economy initiatives at the recent BRICS Summit.

Dr. Fitsum emphasized Ethiopia's unique position in global climate discussions. While most countries grapple with polluting energy sources, she proudly stated that over 95% of Ethiopia's electricity comes from renewable sources. This achievement has been instrumental in ensuring the nation's minimal contribution to climate change. At COP30, Ethiopia plans to present the innovative solutions it's implementing, especially its distinctive approach to energy.

She highlighted that the contentious issue of polluting energy sources often dominates international climate negotiations. Ethiopia, however, not only meets its own clean energy needs but also supplies it to other East African countries. The Minister added that once fully operational, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will further enhance power access across the region. Beyond energy, Ethiopia is actively promoting electric vehicle adoption, supporting it through policy to reduce climate impact.

During the 17th BRICS Summit, climate change was a central theme, with a strong emphasis on the crucial role of international cooperation for climate-vulnerable nations like Ethiopia to achieve sustainable development. Discussions also highlighted the importance of forest conservation and reforestation, advocating for increased global attention and support. A significant point raised was the responsibility of developed countries, as major greenhouse gas emitters, to provide financial assistance to developing nations. The summit also set a course for enhanced collaboration among BRICS countries in new climate-related technologies and finance.

Dr. Fitsum concluded by noting that COP30 will be a vital platform for Ethiopia to demonstrate its effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, with many international ministers, climate institutions, and parliament members expressing keen interest in following Ethiopia's lead in establishing a green footprint.
