Ethiopia is currently pursuing a dynamic foreign policy direction designed to safeguard its national interests amidst a rapidly changing global political and economic landscape. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) explained that the country’s foreign relations and diplomatic strategy are built upon four main pillars to ensure they remain timely, influential, and highly effective.

According to the prime minister, while Ethiopia actively participates in major international events, it carefully follows a diplomatic path that maintains its neutrality, deliberately avoiding entanglement in bloc or factional disputes. Rather than limiting its alliances to a single side or nation, Ethiopia is deeply focused on multiplying genuine and reliable friends across all continents. This approach, he noted, enables the country to cultivate lasting allies who share in its challenges and triumphs, forming deep and trusted partnerships based on mutual understanding.

Recognizing that the world is undergoing profound and rapid shifts, the prime minister emphasized that a rigid mindset can no longer secure long-term national interests. As a result, the government is implementing a flexible system where foreign relations constantly adapt to true, on-the-ground realities. Moving forward, he stressed that Ethiopia must break away from merely accepting the agendas of others and step up as a bold agenda-setter on crucial regional and global issues.

To achieve this, the Prime Minister urged the nation to operate with strong confidence and courage within international institutions and global forums. Ultimately, he stated that this strategic foreign policy direction will elevate Ethiopia’s influence on the world stage, ensuring its national interests are protected on a solid and unshakable foundation.
