Model Ruth Yirgalem has captured global attention on the Miss World stage, using her platform to bring Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage, deep resilience, and human compassion to an international audience.

During the Head-to-Head Challenge in Vietnam, Ruth delivered a powerful presentation introducing Ethiopia as the cradle of humankind, the land of 13 months of sunshine, the birthplace of coffee, and a nation guided by its own unique calendar. 

Wearing vibrant traditional attire, she showcased the country's artistic traditions, intricate craftsmanship, and rich cultural diversity. Her appearance aligned with the event's long-standing "Beauty with a Purpose" ethos, shifting the focus from exterior elegance to community impact and humanitarian advocacy.

Yet behind her celebration of Ethiopian heritage lay a heart-wrenching personal tragedy that deeply moved viewers worldwide. Having lost her mother during childhood and raised by her devoted father, Ruth faced profound grief just days before departing for the competition when her sister, a fashion designer whom Ruth had lovingly nursed through years of illness, was tragically killed in a violent attack.

Choosing to step onto the global stage despite overwhelming heartbreak, Ruth shared that her journey was fueled not by the absence of grief, but by a solemn pledge to honor her family’s legacy and serve as a voice for vulnerable women and children. Transforming her pain into purpose, she launched her advocacy initiative, "The Silent Struggle," which works to protect abused children and educate parents on youth mental health awareness.

In addition, Ruth highlighted her ongoing humanitarian collaboration with the Catherine Hamlin Fistula Center to support Ethiopian mothers suffering from childbirth injuries.
