Ethiopia Leads New Effort to Boost Horn of Africa Trade

Sep 03, 2026 603

Ethiopia is actively advancing initiatives to build strong trade and economic ties across the Horn of Africa, according to the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration.

Addressing the Horn of Africa Trade Ministers meeting in Addis Ababa, officials noted that while recent years have brought visible progress in infrastructure development and cross-border commerce, formal trade between neighboring nations remains unsatisfactory. To bridge this gap, participants emphasized the urgent need to modernize customs procedures and streamline cross-border trade operations, alongside accelerating infrastructure projects and key policy reforms.

State Minister of Trade and Regional Integration Tazer Gebre-Egziabher reaffirmed that Ethiopia is deepening its work to integrate the region economically. He highlighted that the nation is putting in place the practical mechanisms and policy adjustments necessary to support continental free trade objectives.

Central to this push is Ethiopia's Homegrown Economic Reform framework, which has accelerated domestic growth while opening major avenues for regional economic partnership. Officials stressed that the initial success of these reforms will play a pivotal role in cementing long-term commercial and economic ties throughout the Horn of Africa.
