Pakistan has expressed its gratitude to Ethiopia for its crucial support in securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council earlier this year, paving the way for strengthened bilateral relations and increased cooperation on global issues.
The expression of thanks came during a meeting between Pakistan’s Senate Leader and former Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, and an Ethiopian youth delegation currently visiting the country to discuss Ethiopia's successful Green Legacy initiative.
Gilani acknowledged Ethiopia's pivotal role in Pakistan's Security Council election, highlighting its importance for broadening collaborative efforts on the international stage.
"Ethiopia's support was instrumental," stated Gilani, emphasising the significance of the partnership in advancing shared interests within the UN framework.
He also commended the Ethiopian government for sharing its experience with the Green Legacy program, an ambitious environmental initiative, to deepen diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Looking ahead, Pakistan aims to elevate its diplomatic cooperation with Ethiopia to new heights, including strategic partnerships that will further enhance its engagement with the African continent. Gilani affirmed Pakistan's commitment to strengthening its presence and influence within African multilateral forums.
Reinforcing this commitment, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Jemal Beker (PhD), extended an invitation to Pakistan to participate in the upcoming African Climate Change Conference, scheduled to be held in Ethiopia.
This invitation signals Pakistan's growing interest in collaborating with African nations on pressing global issues, such as climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Further solidifying the burgeoning relationship, Ambassador Jemal also announced that Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari is planning an official visit to Ethiopia shortly.
This visit will serve as a key opportunity to explore avenues for deeper collaboration across various sectors, fostering stronger economic, political, and cultural ties.
Beyond sharing knowledge about Ethiopia's Green Legacy, the visiting Ethiopian youth delegation also participated in a Pakistani Senate meeting, providing them with first-hand insights into the Pakistani legislative process and fostering valuable cross-cultural exchange.
The visit underscores the commitment of both nations to cultivating strong people-to-people connections and fostering mutual understanding between future leaders.
