International Solar Alliance Pledges Support for Ethiopia's Green Energy Transition

Aug 20, 2025

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) has announced a firm commitment to supporting Ethiopia's significant push into solar energy development.

ISA Director General Ashish Khanna highlighted Ethiopia's immense potential for alternative energy sources. To capitalize on this, he confirmed that the ISA and Ethiopia have signed a framework agreement for a three-year partnership, focusing on joint projects and policy development.

Khanna also announced the ISA's commitment to helping construct a 400-megawatt solar power plant in Ethiopia, noting that expanding solar infrastructure is crucial for attracting private investment. He pointed to a 100-megawatt solar carport project already built and operational at the Ministry of Water and Energy's compound, which he said will serve as a vital blueprint for a larger, solar-powered water pumping initiative in the future.

The ISA is also investing in human capital, with a program currently training Ethiopian professionals in solar technology at the Addis Ababa University's Center of Excellence. Khanna explained that Ethiopia's ongoing macroeconomic reforms are designed to spur private sector-led growth, a move expected to significantly boost the flow of investment into the country's solar energy sector, according to ENA.

Ultimately, solar power development is a cornerstone of Ethiopia's strategy to build a climate-resilient economy.
