PM Abiy Pledges to Combat Corruption with Modern Systems

Aug 21, 2025

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) announced that Ethiopia is actively working to curb corruption by implementing modern administrative systems.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed distinguished between two forms of corruption. He described "petty theft" as government officials using their authority to charge for services that should be free, while "petty corruption" is individuals using their skills to gain undue advantage. Abiy likened this type of widespread corruption to a weed—difficult to distinguish from the crop, but easy to remove once identified.

The second, more severe form he calls "grand theft," a synchronized and coordinated form of looting carried out by individuals and groups. This includes those who hold power, control media, or even command armed groups. Abiy noted that this type of large-scale theft is challenging for governments to uproot, as it can grow to influence national policy and direction. He recalled that this was prevalent in Ethiopia before his reform. He affirmed that such looting no longer exists in the country.

The Prime Minister stated that his government is establishing a system to eliminate widespread petty theft. He cited modern services like the Mesob single-center service and mobile banking as key tools in this fight, designed to tackle the problem and pave the way for a more transparent future.
