Addis Ababa has turned trash into treasure, with 325 local associations collectively earning over 1.6 billion Birr in the 2017 fiscal year through waste recycling and reuse initiatives. This impressive figure was announced by Mulat Tegegn, Deputy Head of the Addis Ababa City Cleansing Management Agency, during an interview with EBC FM Addis 97.1.
Mulat noted that while residents' waste disposal habits in the capital are continually improving, there's still work to be done. He highlighted that more than 200,000 households have been educated on proper waste segregation and disposal.
Furthermore, Mulat mentioned that a modern waste management system is being implemented, designed to align with the ongoing corridor development projects. He also stated that the purchase of additional cleaning machinery will be finalized in the 2018 E.C. fiscal year.
To further enhance efficient cleaning services befitting Addis Ababa's aspirations to become a smart city, a pilot program involving private partnerships has been launched in selected areas. Mulat also called on residents to support the agency's efforts in building a more sophisticated cleaning culture beyond just the agency's initiatives.
