Ethiopia's push to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) has received a significant boost, with the World Bank officially voicing its support. This announcement follows a productive session at the 6th WTO Working Group meeting held recently in Geneva, Switzerland.
The development was confirmed by the Minister of Trade and Regional Integration, Dr. Kassahun Gofe, during a press briefing on the delegation's return from Geneva.
According to Dr. Kassahun, a total of 30 countries expressed their backing for Ethiopia's membership during the working group session, with the World Bank becoming the 31st supporter.
The Minister highlighted a crucial step forward: "Responses were provided to over 200 questions raised by the Working Group members. Crucially, the Working Group elevated Ethiopia's Factual Report to a Draft Working Group Report, signifying that Ethiopia has reached a crucial milestone in its accession process," he stated.
In parallel with the main accession process, Ethiopia has been actively engaged in bilateral negotiations. The Minister confirmed that Ethiopia conducted bilateral market access negotiations with 14 countries, successfully reaching agreements with six of them.
Dr. Kassahun emphasized that the 6th Working Group meeting indicates Ethiopia is "closer than ever" to full membership. The 7th Working Group meeting is scheduled to take place in January 2026.
