Oct 03, 2025

The Government of Pakistan praised the success Ethiopia has achieved in ensuring food security through its homegrown development models, stating that this makes the country a role model that serves as a best practice for other nations.

In a discussion between Dr. Jamal Beker Abdula, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the F.D.R.E. to Pakistan, and Rana Tanveer Hussain, Pakistan's Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, the Ambassador explained the success of Ethiopia’s homegrown reforms aimed at ensuring its food sovereignty, specifically citing the Green Legacy Initiative and the 'Ye Lemat Tirufat' (Bounty of the Basket) programs.

The Ambassador further noted that Ethiopia is growing its economy while covering 98% of its total energy supply with clean and renewable energy. He added that the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the commencement of the Ogaden Natural Gas Project are expected to increase productivity in the agriculture, manufacturing, and information technology sectors.

The Minister, for his part, highlighted that since both countries have agriculture-based economies, they have a significant opportunity to jointly address the global food security challenge. He praised Ethiopia’s success in coffee exports, indicating that it demonstrates the country's strong policy framework.

Overall, their discussion focused on ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the agriculture and livestock sectors, which will lay the foundation for continuous joint research to enhance agricultural productivity in both countries, according to information received from the Ethiopian Embassy in Pakistan.
