Green Legacy Initiative Boosts Food Sovereignty, Conservation, Says Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute

Oct 06, 2025

The Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI) announced that the country's national Green Legacy Initiative (GLI) is generating significant opportunities for advancing food sovereignty, promoting sustainable economic growth, and strengthening biodiversity conservation.

EBI Director General Karta Kaske said that the institute is actively escalating its conservation efforts, driven by the success of the tree-planting program, reported ENA.

Karta highlighted the GLIs crucial role in reinforcing sustainable agriculture by maintaining soil fertility and bolstering food security. According to the Director General, ongoing soil and water conservation activities are revitalizing ecosystems, which is directly contributing to a surge in agricultural production and productivity. He stressed that achieving long-term food sovereignty hinges on the strategic adoption of improved crop varieties and modern agricultural technologies alongside environmental protection.

Regional authorities from across Ethiopia have echoed this positive assessment of the initiative's impact:

Oromia: Seyfedin Mahadi, Director General of the Oromia Environment Protection Authority, noted the programs success in restoring degraded ecosystems and its direct role in promoting food security through widespread tree planting.

Amhara: Mengesha Awraris, Head of the Amhara Regional State Environment and Forest Protection Authority, commended the GLIs positive effect on biodiversity and land restoration.

Central Ethiopia: Abraham Mecha, Head of the Central Ethiopia Regional State Forest and Environmental Protection Development Bureau, praised the initiative for creating vital opportunities to enhance productivity by improving ecosystems and biodiversity.
