The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (NDC) is ramping up preparations for its highly anticipated National Dialogue Conference, which is set to bring together over 4,000 participants from various stakeholder groups across the country.
The update was provided by Dr. Yonas Addaye, a Commissioner for the National Dialogue Commission, during an appearance on the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation's (EBC) "Dagu"program. He outlined the NDC's foundational vision and future plans.
Commissioner Yonas emphasized that the National Dialogue process is guided by three main objectives:
To achieve a national consensusin Ethiopia.
To foster mutual understanding, both between the people and the governmentand among the people themselves.
To institutionalize dialogue as a core component of Ethiopia's political culture.
The upcoming National Dialogue Conference is the culmination of extensive preparatory work. The NDC has successfully completed its agenda-gathering processin 11 regions and two city administrations, systematically collecting concerns and proposals from citizens.
According to Dr. Yonas, the conference will convene after the NDC completes the critical task of identifying the most salient collected agendas and the root causes of the nation's perennial problems. The ultimate recommendations resulting from the discussions at the Conference will be officially submitted to the House of People's Representatives (HoPR) for action.
The Commissioner also highlighted the inclusivity of the process, noting that the dialogue has facilitated the active participation of Ethiopian citizens residing abroad, alongside those within the country.
This monumental initiative, he concluded, signals Ethiopia's commitment to building a civilized society—one that consciously sets aside the option of force in favor of resolving national challenges through consultation and discussion.
