A prominent Ethiopian historian has articulated the core mission of the Medemer (Synergy) government's philosophy: to establish an encompassing national narrative that can restore Ethiopia to its former civilisational standing.
Dr. Dagmawi Tesfaye, a History Lecturer and Researcher, asserts that this inclusive narrative is the crucial remedy for a nation historically hampered by internal conflicts and political upheaval.
Dr. Dagmawi pointed to Ethiopia’s history of civil strife, chronic political instability, and complex socio-demographic challenges as major impediments to its development. He argued that the nation's inability to replicate its past glories, particularly in establishing robust economic and political structures, was due to "divisive narratives."
The historian explained that external factors, such as the emergence of new political powers in the Red Sea, shifts in trade routes, and changes in the regional balance of power, all contributed to the country's struggle to sustain the long-term civilization it had painstakingly built.
"In general, divisive narratives and exclusive political systems have held the country back," Dr. Dagmawi stated. "By departing from conventional practices and seeking to resolve problems scientifically, the Medemer government's philosophy of amplifying a national narrative is the solution."
The Medemer government, according to Dr. Dagmawi, is actively working to propel Ethiopia toward a higher trajectory of civilization. This is being done by examining and addressing the grievances raised by various societal groups and developing an encompassing narrative that can resolve the underlying issues.
He described the Medemer philosophy as an ideology that addresses the deeply rooted sentiments of citizens who have felt: "oppressed, marginalised, or unfairly treated."
In light of the numerous internal and external challenges currently facing the nation, Dr. Dagmawi stressed the criticality of the present moment. He urged all citizens to recognise the importance of the time and to stand united, dedicating their utmost effort toward the national objective.
He concluded with a call to action: "We must be determined to apply the Medemer government’s philosophy—that a united hand prevails—to ensure we pass on a prosperous era to our children."
