1,800 MW Koysha Hydro Project to Power East Africa, Local Economies

Oct 27, 2025

The Koysha Hydroelectric Project (HEP) is poised to significantly transform Ethiopia's energy sector, adding a massive 1,800 MW of installed capacity to the national grid and producing an estimated 6,344 GWh of clean, reliable electricity annually to meet the country's growing demand. Beyond its capacity expansion, the Koysha HEP will support Ethiopia’s ambition to become a regional electricity export hub in East Africa.

At the local level, the project is expected to enhance electricity access for households and small businesses, complementing ongoing rural electrification programs. This is also expected to stimulate socio-economic development, improve living standards, and support sustainable growth in the surrounding communities.

The Koysha Hydroelectric Project (HEP) is located approximately 129 km downstream of the Gibe III Hydropower Project along the Omo River, near Koysha Village in the Southwest Regional State of Ethiopia.
