Oct 27, 2025

Adem Farah, Deputy President of Ethiopia's Prosperity Party, has announced that efforts are underway to foster a robust and mature political environment in the country, one that effectively balances competition and consultation.

Adem made the remarks during a consultative forum that recently began in Bahir Dar, bringing together members of the Amhara Regional State government and representatives from various political parties. The forum saw the participation of Adem, who also serves as Head of the Prosperity Party's Head Office, along with Arega Kebede, Chief Administrator of the Amhara Regional State, and other senior party leaders and political parties active in the region.

During the forum, Adem further emphasized that Ethiopia is actively building a sophisticated political system, one underpinned by both consultation and competition. He highlighted that robust legal frameworks, institutional structures, and a conducive environment, including a strong constitution and the National Election Board, have been put in place to facilitate this development.

He further noted that an environment has been created for each political party to freely present their alternative proposals to the public. Moreover, he stated that a favorable situation now encourages parties to consult, discuss, and deliberate amongst themselves, and even to challenge the ruling party.

Adem also underscored the imperative for all parties to respect law and order, safeguard the country's national interests, and contribute to peace and stability. He specifically urged parties to collaborate in halting the atrocities perpetrated by extremist groups against the public in the Amhara Regional State and to play their part in building a mature political system.

For his part, Amhara Regional State Chief Administrator Arega Kebede affirmed that since the national reform, a conducive environment has been established for competing parties to foster a developed political system in the country. He highlighted that parties utilizing peaceful alternatives for this advanced political practice are indeed playing a positive role.

However, Arega cautioned that extremist groups, intent on seizing political power through outdated and forceful means, are inflicting significant harm on the region's populace. Therefore, he urged all political parties in the region to play their part in efforts to resolve the prevailing challenges through democratic means and civilized dialogue.
