HoPR Members Press Government on TPLF, Economic Reforms, Cost of Living

Oct 28, 2025

Members of the Ethiopian House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR) have challenged the government with eight critical questions across key national domains.

In the area of security and peace, the parliamentarians sought clarity on the measures being taken against anti-peace forces, including those allegedly receiving support from "historical enemies" to weaken Ethiopia, and what support is expected from the public.

They also demanded an update on the situation in Tigray, expressing concern that the TPLF is disregarding the Pretoria Agreement and potentially collaborating with "Shabia" forces, asking specifically what the government is doing to restore peace and the current status of the region's security.

Pertaining to governance, questions focused on the national consultation (or dialogue), asking what is expected of various stakeholders to ensure its success and what the government's stance is on non-participating political parties. They also inquired about future plans for establishing good governance and eradicating corrupt practices.

Economically, the lawmakers pressed for a detailed explanation of the macroeconomic reform process and future prospects, particularly addressing the weakening purchasing power of the birr and related threats.

Finally, they raised urgent concerns about the rising cost of living, questioning what steps are being taken to address observed price increases in commodities and rent—a phenomenon often linked to salary increments—and requested a detailed explanation to the public on the strategic benefits of the Guba projects and the government's plan to improve housing supply.
