PM Abiy Urges Opponents to End Obstruction, Join Talks

Oct 28, 2025

Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed affirmed his government's firm commitment to peaceful conflict resolution while addressing the House of Peoples' Representatives today.

He directly challenged skeptics, stating, "It is surprising for anyone who has seen me and Getachew Reda to think 'this government does not negotiate.'" This pointed reference highlights his engagement with the former top Tigray official, underscoring the government's willingness to sit down with adversaries.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the issues between him and other figures are "not a personal issue but a national one." He stressed that personal differences must be set aside as long as there is an agreement on the broader national interest of Ethiopia.

Dr. Abiy reiterated that the path forward for Ethiopia requires a peaceful transfer of power, a process he believes demands only patience and time.

The Prime Minister confirmed that dialogue with various forces is appropriate. He extended an open invitation, saying, "Our door is open to work together with anyone who says 'let's negotiate following the law.'"

He cited recent talks with elements of the 'Shene' group and parties from Tigray as proof of the government's openness to discussion.

Finally, he issued a strong appeal to groups that obstruct development and prevent essential resources like fertilizer from reaching the populace they claim to represent. He urged them to "depart from this practice and come to resolve problems through dialogue."
