Ethiopia and China have reached an agreement to further strengthen their cooperation in the justice sector.
A high-level Ethiopian delegation, led by Justice Minister Hanna Arayaselassie, traveled to Guangzhou, China, to participate in the China-Africa Public Prosecutors Cooperation Forum, which is commencing on Thursday.
During the visit, Minister Hanna held bilateral discussions with the Prosecutor General of the People’s Republic of China, Ying Yong. The talks underscored the nations' shared history as symbols of ancient civilization and their long-standing diplomatic relations.
The officials noted that efforts will be intensified to ensure the effective implementation of existing agreements between the two countries, specifically concerning the transfer of sentenced persons and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
Recalling a previous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on capacity-building between their respective justice institutions, the Ministry of Justice announced that a new consensus was reached to pursue even closer collaboration moving forward.
Chinese Prosecutor General Ying Yong emphasized that, given Ethiopia's status as the seat of the African Union and the strong existing friendship between the two nations, China views Ethiopia as a crucial gateway for fostering positive relations across the African continent. He affirmed that the Chinese government is committed to strengthening its ties with Ethiopia in the future.
